IVECO is a commercial vehicle manufacturer from Italy. Although its heavy-duty trucks are no longer sold in the domestic market, its legendary Daily series light commercial vehicles are renowned worldwide, with both imported models and localized domestic models having significant visibility.

In September 2024, the “World’s Largest Commercial Vehicle Exhibition”: the IAA Exhibition in Hanover, Germany (referred to as the IAA Exhibition) officially kicked off. IVECO is currently undergoing a major transformation, having first sold its well-known firefighting equipment manufacturing company Magirus, and then forming partnerships with companies such as South Korea’s Hyundai, Turkey’s Ford Trucks, and China’s Foton. At this year’s IAA exhibition, IVECO showcased multiple cutting-edge products under the theme “Road to Transformation.” Let’s take a look.

In November 2023, IVECO launched its revamped Way series of heavy-duty trucks, including its road flagship, the S-Way. It features a large cabin and a 13-liter engine, combined with IVECO’s latest technologies, making it a key highlight at the IAA exhibition. The image above shows a new IVECO S-Way, running on BIO-LNG (biomethane liquefied natural gas) fuel, equipped with the new-generation xCursor 13G natural gas engine. This 12.9-liter inline six-cylinder engine delivers 500 horsepower and 2,200 Nm of torque, with a maximum torque range covering 1,000 to 1,500 rpm. Paired with the second-generation ZF TraXon transmission, it offers solid power performance with exceptionally low natural gas consumption.

Compared to its predecessor, the new IVECO S-Way appears more refined. While retaining the overall shape of the previous model, the new version allows for optional front grille designs. By combining different paint colors and surface treatments, various exterior effects can be achieved. This exhibition model features a black front grille with green accents, giving it a more powerful appearance. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with IVECO’s electronic rearview mirror system, offering a wider and safer driving view while reducing the bulkiness of the vehicle.

During the loading and unloading of goods or plugging in electrical cables, the driver’s hands are likely to get dirty. To ensure cleanliness, IVECO has thoughtfully included a water tank with a soap dispenser in the side storage box of the vehicle, allowing drivers to wash their hands before getting back into the vehicle. Of course, there’s no need to worry about the water tank taking up interior storage space: the IVECO S-Way features dual-level storage boxes. The upper box connects to the cabin, while the lower box is relatively independent, ideal for storing miscellaneous items.

The water tank and soap dispenser are located in the lower storage box, accessible via a sliding rail system for easy use.

In terms of interior design, the vehicle’s steering wheel now adopts a four-spoke design and features IVECO’s new flat logo. The start button is placed on the steering wheel, below the left-side multifunction buttons, giving it a sporty feel reminiscent of a supercar. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with dual large screens, along with electronic rearview mirror displays on the A-pillars, adding a strong sense of technology.

In addition to the external hand-washing water tank, the new IVECO S-Way also features several thoughtful amenities inside the cabin. A microwave oven is installed in the overhead storage compartment, powered by a high-capacity lead-acid battery and a high-power inverter, allowing drivers to easily heat meals.

The rear wall of the cabin has an additional storage cabinet for drivers to carry more personal belongings and luggage.

When the storage cabinet is opened, a spacious compartment is revealed. The leftmost section houses a Dometic car refrigerator, which works in tandem with the refrigerator under the bed, allowing drivers to carry more refrigerated food and beverages. The refrigerator can also be removed for standalone use, providing greater flexibility. To accommodate clothing and other small items, IVECO has designed a mesh restraint in the middle storage cabinet, effectively securing items and preventing them from falling.

IVECO’s natural gas technology is considered to be far ahead in the European truck industry. At this year’s IAA exhibition, IVECO also showcased an S-Way tractor powered by BIO-CNG (compressed biogas) fuel, sporting a green exterior and equipped with high-tech features like electronic rearview mirrors. Whether it’s compressed biogas or liquefied biogas, they both share a common characteristic: they are derived from organic waste such as livestock manure and kitchen waste, achieving environmentally-friendly and clean energy, drastically reducing carbon emissions, and enabling almost 100% CO₂ reduction without compromising vehicle performance.

Of course, the diesel-powered IVECO S-Way model was also present at this year’s IAA exhibition. Powered by the diesel version of the xCursor 13 engine, it utilizes lightweight, low-friction materials and optimizes components like the engine valves. It also features a new thermal management system and fuel injection system, paired with a higher compression ratio, resulting in a 7% reduction in fuel consumption and a total weight reduction of 114 kg compared to the previous 13-liter engine.

The diesel version of the xCursor 13 engine is available in four horsepower versions: 460 horsepower (2,500 Nm), 500 horsepower (2,600 Nm), 540 horsepower (2,700 Nm), and 580 horsepower (2,800 Nm). The 460-horsepower version reaches maximum torque between 820 rpm and 1,100 rpm, while the 500-horsepower version reaches its maximum torque between 842 rpm and 1,100 rpm. With the peak torque available at such low rpm, the transient response performance is extremely impressive.

The IVECO S-Way 4×2 tractor, equipped with the top-tier 580-horsepower engine, also made its debut at this IAA exhibition. This vehicle is the result of a collaboration between IVECO and the heavy metal band Metallica. As one of the world’s top heavy metal bands, Metallica partnered with IVECO to provide a full range of multi-fuel vehicle solutions for their M72 World Tour, supporting the transportation of equipment and gear.

The EuroCargo is IVECO’s main medium-duty truck model, and the updated version also appeared at this IAA exhibition. It is powered by the new Tector 7 CNG natural gas engine, with a displacement of 6.7 liters, and is available in three versions: 220 horsepower, 250 horsepower, and 280 horsepower. The vehicle also comes standard with an 8-speed automatic transmission from ZF, and an optional Allison 3000 automatic transmission, providing smooth power delivery and reducing power interruptions.

Today, IVECO emphasizes a multi-fuel strategy, offering flexible propulsion solutions to address future challenges. At this year’s IAA exhibition, an important part of IVECO’s multi-fuel strategy was also on display: the all-electric heavy-duty truck. The S-eWay all-electric heavy-duty chassis made its global debut. Previously, IVECO only offered the S-eWay in a tractor model. With the introduction of the heavy-duty chassis, IVECO’s electric heavy-duty trucks can now serve the heavy-duty urban distribution and municipal vehicle markets, expanding the range of operational scenarios they can cover.

The IVECO S-eWay all-electric heavy-duty chassis is available with 4, 5, or 7 battery packs, with each pack having a capacity of 70 kWh, giving the vehicle a maximum battery capacity of 490 kWh. Depending on the needs of different applications, the battery packs can be repositioned, or even mounted entirely on one side of the chassis, freeing up space to accommodate various equipment configurations.

With a 490 kWh battery pack, the IVECO S-eWay all-electric heavy-duty chassis can achieve a range of 400 kilometers and supports 350 kW DC fast charging. The vehicle’s drive system is supplied by FPT Industrial, featuring a dual-motor electric drive axle that provides a continuous power output of 480 kW (653 horsepower) and a torque of 1,800 Nm. The integrated electric drive axle offers higher transmission efficiency and a more compact structure, allowing for a more flexible chassis layout.

The narrow cab design meets real-world operational needs, and the inclusion of electronic rearview mirrors, side blind spot radars, and other sensors as standard features enhances safety.

The IVECO S-eWay all-electric heavy-duty chassis, showcased at this year’s IAA exhibition, is already available for order in Europe and will begin deliveries in the second half of next year.

At this year’s IAA exhibition, IVECO also brought us a highly anticipated exhibit: the S-Way hydrogen internal combustion hybrid heavy-duty truck, officially named the S-eWay H2-Hybrid Concept. This truck adopts a range-extended hybrid architecture, where the hydrogen internal combustion engine serves as a range extender, and it is equipped with an energy storage system and electric drive axle provided by FPT Industrial, marking it as a cutting-edge concept vehicle.

IVECO has brought us two hydrogen internal combustion models in succession, and the image above showcases another one: a “pure internal combustion” heavy truck powered by the Cursor 13 H2 hydrogen internal combustion engine, with a displacement of 13 liters, producing 500 horsepower and 2500 Nm of torque. It does not feature a hybrid power system and is equipped with the ZF TraXon transmission and standard rear axle. The mechanical drive offers more robust and solid power output, with the entire system being more reliable and structurally simple, making it suitable for demanding and harsh working conditions.

Both models are developed based on the S-Way series vehicle platform but feature a more protruding and rounded low-drag front end. Previously, the IVECO S-eWay H2 hydrogen fuel cell heavy truck adopted this body structure, which is also a legacy from IVECO’s collaboration with the new trucking force: Nikola.

Both vehicles’ hydrogen storage systems utilize a back-mounted design and are equipped with large-area aerodynamic fairings, giving the whole vehicle a powerful appearance. Based on the experience from the IVECO S-eWay H2 hydrogen fuel cell heavy truck, both S-Way hydrogen internal combustion heavy trucks will also primarily promote a 6×2 rear axle steering chassis to support the total weight of the vehicle and compress the turning radius to within 12.5 meters, meeting regulatory requirements.

The S-Way hydrogen internal combustion hybrid heavy truck is equipped with the Cursor 9 H2 Hybrid engine from FPT Industrial, developed from the Cursor 9 inline six-cylinder diesel engine, producing 310 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. The engine does not directly drive the vehicle but serves as a generator to charge the onboard power battery.

After removing the cabin, the hydrogen storage system of the S-Way hydrogen internal combustion hybrid heavy truck comes into view. In addition to the back-mounted system, IVECO has also mounted hydrogen tanks on the side of the chassis, providing a total hydrogen capacity of 1800 liters/72 kilograms.

Built on the hydrogen storage system, the IVECO S-Way hydrogen internal combustion hybrid heavy truck is also equipped with two sets of 80 kWh battery packs supplied by FPT Industrial. Meanwhile, the vehicle’s electric drive axle also comes from FPT Industrial, with a power output of up to 400 kW, equivalent to 544 horsepower.

Together with the previously released IVECO S-eWay H2 hydrogen fuel cell model, IVECO has formed a tripartite technology route of hydrogen fuel cell + hydrogen internal combustion + hydrogen internal combustion hybrid, continuously investing in the hydrogen fuel commercial vehicle sector.

As IVECO’s best-selling commercial vehicle product, the Daily series light commercial vehicles also made an appearance at this year’s IAA exhibition. Currently, the Daily series offers diesel, natural gas, pure electric, and fuel cell versions, along with various body and chassis configurations. To date, the IVECO Daily has reached a milestone of 1.8 million units produced, enjoying a good reputation in the global market.

The all-electric IVECO eDaily van also made an appearance.

At this year’s IAA exhibition, IVECO also introduced a globally premier new product: the eMoovy. This new vehicle targets the 2.5 to 3.5-ton light commercial vehicle market, built on Hyundai’s eLCV pure electric light commercial vehicle platform, and is the first model in its class in the European market based on a BEV platform.

The design of the IVECO eMoovy continues the smooth contours of the Hyundai eLCV platform product: the ST1 model, resembling a fat-headed fish. This creates a sturdy body structure that helps reduce aerodynamic drag while providing better protection for the driver and battery. Leveraging advanced technology from the Hyundai eLCV platform, the IVECO eMoovy features a proven electrical system, a safety-focused battery management system, and unique suspension designed for comfort and flexibility.

The IVECO eMoovy offers two different battery pack configurations: 63 kWh and 76 kWh. With the 76 kWh configuration, the vehicle’s WLTP range can reach up to 320 km. Additionally, the IVECO eMoovy supports 350 kW DC fast charging, with single-phase AC charging power of 7 kW and three-phase AC charging power of 11 kW, accommodating various site and operational requirements. Furthermore, the IVECO eMoovy supports a 3.6 kW external power output, facilitating the use of various electric tools.

The IVECO eMoovy is equipped with a 160 kW (215 horsepower) electric motor, delivering a maximum torque of 350 Nm and offering outstanding performance. In terms of range, charging speed, and power performance, the IVECO eMoovy stands out among its peers. Meanwhile, the vehicle has a payload capacity of up to 1.5 tons and features a “low platform” design, increasing the maximum cargo volume to 10 cubic meters.

In terms of interior design, the IVECO eMoovy inherits the multimedia cabin of the modern Staria MPV, featuring a 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and a 10.25-inch LCD multimedia screen, providing clear human-machine interaction and reducing visual obstructions. Additionally, the IVECO eMoovy adopts a “double A-pillar” design, with an additional triangular window in the A-pillar that minimizes blind spots, overcoming the inherent disadvantages of a large angle for the A-pillar.

From the exhibition lineup at this year’s IAA, we can see that IVECO is currently undergoing a full transformation process. In addition to deepening its traditional advantages in diesel and natural gas models, pure electric and hydrogen fuel technologies have also become areas where IVECO is continuously focusing its efforts. Meanwhile, IVECO employs a “multi-legged” strategy, not only allowing for many redundancies in technology pathways but also actively collaborating with global commercial vehicle companies like Hyundai and Foton. The Road Of Change has become a declaration that IVECO continues to uphold. Thank you for reading this article!
