The New Energy Heavy Truck Market: How to Break Through in a “Red Ocean”?
Recently, a concept car release event by Foton Cavan under Foton Motors has attracted wide attention in the industry.

An “Eye-Catching” Launch Event
At the beginning of this year, Foton Cavan, a new energy commercial vehicle brand, was officially launched, focusing on two major technological routes: pure electric and hydrogen fuel cells. Foton Cavan plans to introduce a series of vehicles including vans, light trucks, and heavy trucks in both domestic and international markets over the next three years, with the first product expected to launch in 2024.
The year has quietly passed, and on December 21, 2024, Foton Cavin held a Technology Strategy and New Product Launch event at Foton Motors’ X Lab. During this event, Foton Cavan ’s first VAN product, the “LeFu”, was officially unveiled, along with the debut of its heavy-duty truck concept, Beacon (“Beacon” symbolizes Foton Cavan ‘s aspiration to become the “beacon” for new energy heavy trucks, leading the industry’s transformation and upgrading).
A Bold Move Away from the “Red Ocean” Competition
As mentioned earlier, the Beacon concept truck launched by Foton Cavan is very different from other mainstream new energy heavy trucks on the market. Its design, both in terms of appearance and interior space, is truly stunning. Particularly when sitting in the driver’s seat, one can’t help but marvel, “Can a truck really look and feel this way?” However, the biggest difference lies in the fact that Beacon is a next-generation platform specifically designed for long-haul logistics, not just for short-distance urban freight.

Foton Cavan is not the first brand to target the long-haul logistics sector with new energy heavy trucks. But why do so many brands want to enter this market?
According to Qin Zhidhong, General Manager of Foton Cavan, “Short-distance logistics like urban freight is already a huge market, and current products (electric conversion of traditional trucks) can already meet the needs. This ‘red ocean’ market is not where we want to compete.” The logic behind this is that the long-haul logistics market holds immense growth potential, especially as long-haul trucking represents more than 70% of the market, where electric heavy trucks have yet to fully meet the demand.

In fact, according to data from First Commercial Vehicle Network, by November 2024, domestic new energy tractor sales reached 44,100 units with a penetration rate of about 15.41%. Though this figure shows significant growth from previous years, the remaining 80% of the market is still largely untapped. Clearly, the potential for growth in new energy tractor sales is immense, and Foton Cavan is not alone in recognizing this.
Aiming to “Break Through” with Long Range, Low Energy Consumption, and Lightweight Design
Foton Cavan aims to “break the status quo” by delivering a new generation of energy-efficient heavy trucks for long-haul logistics. According to Qin Zhidhong, “The current new energy trucks can’t meet the needs of long-haul logistics, so only by ‘redefining’ the product can we truly break the situation.” By leveraging Foton Motors’ powerful vehicle networking platform and big data analytics, Foton Cavan has analyzed the operating data of 380,000 trucks and identified the characteristics of long-haul logistics, including “long distances, high speeds, and time-sensitive operations.”

Foton Cavan’s Beacon concept truck, a 6×4 pure electric tractor, weighs approximately the same as its diesel counterpart, offering an exceptionally high level of lightweight design. The vehicle is equipped with a 600 kWh battery pack, with a range of over 500 kilometers and an average energy consumption of under 110 kWh per 100 kilometers, equivalent to just over 1 kWh per kilometer.
Innovation in Both Electric and Hydrogen Technology
Foton Cavan’s platform adopts both electric and hydrogen fuel cell technologies. The Beacon concept vehicle, designed for long-haul logistics, uses a high-energy-density battery system with modular design for flexibility, along with a high-efficiency drive bridge, ensuring the truck can operate effectively in various logistics scenarios. It also utilizes adaptive algorithms to optimize energy consumption, making it more efficient.
For hydrogen-fuel trucks, Foton Cavan integrates high-performance fuel cell modules with long-range capabilities and low hydrogen consumption, achieving a hydrogen consumption of only 6.9 kg per 100 km. The vehicle’s hydrogen storage system has an impressive capacity and can be refueled in just 10-15 minutes.
Ecosystem for Green Logistics
Foton Cavan’s “electric if possible, hydrogen if necessary” approach aims to provide solutions for all types of logistics scenarios. With high-capacity battery electric trucks for medium-range routes (500 km), and hydrogen trucks for long-range routes (over 1100 km), Foton Cavan is designing an ecosystem that supports charging, energy storage, and hydrogen refueling, addressing the entire logistics supply chain.
The Beacon platform is compatible with electric, hydrogen, and liquid hydrogen trucks, enabling it to meet various demands for 6×4 and 4×2 configurations. By sharing major components like the chassis, body, and drive bridge, the platform increases efficiency and reduces manufacturing costs, making it adaptable to a range of logistics scenarios.
Vision for 2026: A New Era of Logistics
Foton Cavan plans to launch its first production-ready heavy truck for long-haul logistics by 2026, with a complete ecosystem for charging and hydrogen refueling fully in place. This timeline, while ambitious, aligns with their careful approach to meeting the evolving needs of the long-haul logistics market and addressing the limitations of current electric heavy trucks.

As Qin Zhidhong stated, “By 2026, we will have built a complete ecosystem for electric and hydrogen trucks. This is a key step in the transformation of long-haul logistics and our commitment to shaping the future of the new energy commercial vehicle industry.”
In Conclusion
By 2026, with the Beacon leading the way, China’s long-haul logistics industry, particularly for long-distance routes, will likely experience a transformative shift toward new energy solutions. The breakthrough Foton Cavan is working toward could create a whole new wave in the logistics industry.
We’re looking forward to seeing how Foton Cavan will shape the future of the commercial vehicle industry!
