It is well-known that the Japanese automotive market is called “the most closed automotive market in the world”. In Japan, local enterprises such as Toyota and Honda firmly hold market share, making it difficult for companies from other countries to compete in this market. This is true for passenger vehicles, and the same applies to commercial vehicles. However, leveraging advantages such as advanced technology, BYD has made a strong foray into the Japanese market in recent years. It has successively established a firm foothold in industries such as pure electric buses and pure electric passenger vehicles, setting an example for other domestic automotive enterprises.

From October 30 to November 9, Japan’s largest mobility exhibition – the Japan Mobility Show – was held at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center. At this year’s show, BYD brought a new model making its global debut: the T35 pure electric light truck. Tailored for modern urban logistics, this model features a host of detailed highlights. Let’s take a closer look.

The name “BYD T35” is a combination of “T” (Truck) and “3.5” (3.5-ton GVW), directly indicating the vehicle’s core attributes and parameters. As a 3.5-ton pure electric light truck, the BYD T35 has an effective payload of approximately 1 ton, which can meet actual needs under most working conditions.

In the field of pure electric commercial vehicles, BYD is undoubtedly a leader. Its pure electric trucks such as the ETM6 and ETH8 are sold far and wide to Europe and the United States, providing BYD with rich experience. Based on its in-depth industry insights, the BYD T35 offers solutions to the pain points of traditional vehicles.

How can this be demonstrated? First, the body size of the BYD T35 has been carefully designed. Its total body length is approximately 4.99 meters, and total body width is about 1.88 meters. Compared with similar models on the market, the BYD T35 is significantly more compact, with a turning radius of only 4.8 meters. This allows it to navigate more easily through narrow urban roads and meet the “last-mile” delivery needs. Thanks to this size, the total weight of the BYD T35 is controlled within 3.5 tons, so it can be driven with an ordinary driver’s license. This not only lowers the threshold for commercial use of the vehicle but also makes it possible for ordinary people to drive it. It can be used not only as a delivery vehicle but also has potential as a recreational vehicle, utility vehicle, and more.

Moreover, the BYD T35 pure electric light truck adopts leading technologies. It is built on BYD’s e-Platform pure electric platform and constructed with CTC (Cell to Chassis) technology that integrates the battery with the chassis. This technology combines BYD’s lithium iron phosphate blade battery with a robust chassis. It not only saves space in the vehicle chassis but also increases the torsional stiffness of the frame and lowers the center of gravity, thereby greatly improving the vehicle’s driving stability. This solves inherent pain points of traditional fuel vehicles such as “heavy front and light rear” and also frees up space on the side of the chassis, making it easier to install various additional equipment.

Considering the vehicle usage needs in the Asia-Pacific region, the BYD T35 pure electric light truck uses a cab-over design. While maximizing the interior space, the vehicle’s A-pillars adopt a slanted design. On one hand, this reduces blind spots in the field of vision; on the other hand, it lowers air resistance. Combined with the optimized body streamline, the drag coefficient of the BYD T35 pure electric light truck is only 0.42cd, which helps improve driving efficiency and extend the range.

In line with its modern cab design, practical configurations such as LED headlights are also featured on the BYD T35 pure electric light truck.

The BYD T35 pure electric light truck applies BYD’s proud lithium iron phosphate blade battery technology, combining safety and high energy density. The total battery capacity of the vehicle is 62kWh, and the range under WLTC conditions reaches 250 kilometers, which is sufficient to cover delivery needs in cities and surrounding areas. The matched motor has a peak power of 150kW and a maximum torque of 340N·m, which not only meets the demand for efficient power under heavy load but also copes with the mountainous and undulating road conditions in Japan.

In terms of interior design, the BYD T35 pure electric light truck is also fully equipped. It adopts a fully forward-developed passenger-car-style design, featuring a passenger-vehicle-level exquisite interior. It is equipped with a full LCD instrument panel, a touch-sensitive multimedia central control screen, and a three-spoke multifunctional steering wheel. Configurations such as ventilated seats and heated seats are also available, creating a comfortable and relaxed driving experience.

In addition to comfort, the BYD T35 pure electric light truck also prioritizes the driver’s safety. The vehicle is equipped with a unique automatic road condition recognition and adaptation system, which can identify the road conditions during driving: when driving on flat roads, it controls power output to achieve smooth driving, avoid sudden acceleration, and reduce energy consumption; when driving in mountainous areas, the vehicle unlocks full power output, providing higher torque and stronger power. In addition, functions such as FCW (Forward Collision Warning), LDW (Lane Departure Warning), and ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) come as standard, providing protection for safe operations.

For the T35 pure electric light truck, BYD’s ambition is clearly not limited to commercial use. It is a “vehicle that can be used anywhere”, thanks to its V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) and V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) external discharge capabilities. It can easily power various external loads and be used as a “mobile power station”. Even in remote wilderness areas, one can enjoy the comfort of modern life with its sufficient power supply.

In the exhibition area of the T35 pure electric light truck, BYD also showcased a special vehicle. Based on the T35 flatbed truck, this vehicle is equipped with a sauna room, a portable bathtub, camping chairs, and other equipment, with all facilities powered by the vehicle’s external discharge function. It is a “customized” model designed for young people in Japan who pursue a higher quality of life. It caters to the psychological needs of young Japanese people to get close to nature and return to nature, while also demonstrating the flexible solutions that the T35 pure electric light truck can provide.

With the T35 pure electric light truck, BYD has broken the boundaries of traditional light truck usage scenarios. Relying on its external discharge capabilities, high maneuverability, and the low threshold of being drivable with an ordinary driver’s license, the BYD T35 pure electric light truck has formed strong advantages. In addition to commercial uses such as delivery, it can also be further transformed into recreational vehicles and other vehicles for family use and entertainment, thereby greatly expanding its usage scenarios and bringing consumers a more flexible and interesting travel experience.

To meet the needs of the Japanese market, the BYD T35 pure electric light truck currently offers two upper-body options: aluminum cargo compartments and flatbeds. It will go on sale in the spring of 2026, with a pre-sale price starting at 8 million yen (equivalent to approximately 370,000 yuan). In the highly competitive Japanese market, this price is undoubtedly quite affordable. With the T35 pure electric light truck, BYD can compete with local Japanese enterprises such as Isuzu and Mitsubishi Fuso, marking another milestone for Chinese new energy commercial vehicle enterprises in the global market. In the future, this vehicle will also be sold in global markets such as the Asia-Pacific and Latin America, and it will also be available in China. Let’s look forward to it!
