Recently, Weichai’s hydrogen internal combustion engine generator set has successfully realized China’s first stable grid-connected operation powered purely by hydrogen for electricity generation. This milestone marks a critical step forward in the commercial application of hydrogen internal combustion engines in China, further demonstrating Weichai’s contribution to the construction of industrial green microgrids and boosting the high-quality development of hydrogen energy application fields.
The grid-connected Weichai hydrogen internal combustion engine generator set is deployed at Wuxi Huaguang Energy Conservation’s microgrid demonstration project. As an industrial-scale demonstration project integrating energy sources, grids, loads and energy storage, the Weichai unit serves as the core component of the microgrid, undertaking the critical tasks of high-efficiency hydrogen energy conversion and stable supply of green electricity.
The WP13 hydrogen internal combustion engine matched with this unit is a customized product jointly developed by Weichai and Wuxi Huaguang Energy Conservation. It has successfully resolved industry-wide common challenges such as limited output power and rotational speed fluctuations caused by unstable hydrogen combustion. The product’s rotational speed fluctuation is precisely controlled within ±3r/min, fully meeting the stringent requirements for grid-connected power generation. It has opened up a critical link for the local consumption of industrial by-product hydrogen, providing solid technical support for the high-quality construction of zero-carbon industrial parks in the region.
This successful grid connection has enabled Weichai’s hydrogen internal combustion engine generator set to build a full-chain green energy application model of “hydrogen energy conversion – clean power generation – grid connection and consumption” for customers, offering a replicable practical sample for the commercial application of hydrogen energy power generation.
As a pioneer in the R&D and application of hydrogen internal combustion engines, Weichai has jointly launched China’s first commercial hydrogen internal combustion engine heavy truck with Sinotruk, taking the lead in opening up the application pathway of hydrogen internal combustion engines in the commercial vehicle sector. Looking ahead, Weichai will focus on diverse application scenarios in transportation, energy, engineering machinery and other fields, and launch more cost-effective and reliable integrated solutions for hydrogen internal combustion engines.
