Recently, Windrose Technology, a leading enterprise in China’s new energy heavy-duty truck sector, has successfully passed the ultimate entry barrier to the North American market. Following the acquisition of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) vehicle certification in January 2025 and the CARB certification for its LFP and NCM powertrains in April, the company obtained the vehicle certification issued by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) in May. Currently, Weidu Windrose has launched road tests with Joyride, an operator under Amazon (the world’s largest logistics company), and Nevoya, an operator under CH Robinson (the world’s fifth-largest logistics company), and is set to start deliveries in the North American market in 2026.
This marks Weidu Technology as the first Chinese new-force heavy-duty truck brand to simultaneously obtain the two core environmental certifications of EPA and CARB, completely opening up the green channel to enter the world’s most stringent automotive market.
The EPA certification is a mandatory federal environmental access system implemented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), covering all 50 states in the U.S. It is an indispensable “basic passport” for automotive products to enter the U.S. market, aiming to ensure that products comply with environmental regulations and reduce impacts on public health and the environment.
The CARB certification, enforced by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), is renowned as the “Mount Everest” of environmental regulations due to its unparalleled stringency. California’s regulations are often regarded as an industry benchmark; their standards have been adopted by 17 other U.S. states and have a profound impact on the formulation of global new energy commercial vehicle emission rules.
CARB certification requirements are significantly higher than EPA standards, especially for battery systems, with stricter in-depth requirements such as heavy metal leaching control and full-life-cycle carbon footprint tracking, forming substantial technical barriers. For automotive products, entering the California market requires meeting both EPA and CARB certifications.
The flagship model Weidu R700, which obtained the certifications, fully demonstrates its hardcore product strength: equipped with a super-large capacity battery pack of over 700kWh, it can still achieve a full-load range of over 600km at a high speed of 100km/d in the U.S.; based on an 800V high-voltage platform, it supports megawatt-level fast charging technology, which can replenish 400km of range in just 35 minutes, and is compatible with various local charging standards such as CCS1 and MCS in the U.S., effectively addressing the pain points of heavy-duty truck operations.
At a time when carbon neutrality is reshaping the global commercial vehicle landscape, the success of these two certifications is a milestone in Weidu’s “compliance first” strategy, and even more a turning point for Chinese heavy-duty trucks from technological catch-up to standard leadership.
