Scania at IAA 2024: Laying the Foundation for Sustainable Transport

From September 17 to 22, 2024, Scania presented its diverse and customer-focused product lineup at the Hannover International Commercial Vehicle Show (IAA 2024), under the theme “Future Energy Hub.” Scania showcased sustainable, digital, and comprehensive transport solutions designed to support the transitioning transport industry. The booth highlighted customized solutions, reaffirming Scania’s leading position in the industry. Whether customers opt for biodiesel, biogas, or electric trucks, Scania offers modular maintenance, charging solutions, connected services, and other features, ensuring optimal total operating costs for different customers.

“Customers can now benefit from more environmentally friendly choices without worrying about emissions negatively impacting their day-to-day operations. This shift is laying a solid foundation for a fossil-free future in heavy transport,” said Christian Levin, President and CEO of Scania. “Achieving electrified transport depends on the establishment of a full ecosystem. To be the best partner for our customers, we must provide not only the vehicles themselves but also a complete ecosystem solution, including charging infrastructure, battery performance monitoring, dynamic route planning, financing, and many other services. Over the past two years, we have worked tirelessly to ensure that these services are ready.”

Modular Strategy Delivers Comprehensive Electric Solutions

Scania applies its modular strategy to electric solutions, allowing for the rapid expansion of its all-electric truck offerings. In addition to various motor and battery options, Scania provides a range of chassis, PTO (power take-off), cab, and axle configurations, including the popular 6×4 axle setup for all-electric trucks.

“The modular strategy also applies to our all-electric truck solutions,” said Stefano Fedel, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Scania. “It enables us to create value for our customers with unprecedented speed and quality. While developing our products requires careful thought, the benefits of modularity are immediate. By optimizing metrics like range and payload, we ensure that customers receive solutions tailored to their operational needs.”

For customers, Scania’s electric truck solutions in 2024 offer high quality and fully meet their needs. Feedback from customers, media tests, and other activities confirm that Scania’s all-electric trucks deliver on their promises—and even exceed expectations—in terms of driving performance, range, and charging. In summary, Scania’s electric trucks exhibit a high degree of maturity and reliability. However, before widespread adoption of all-electric trucks can be achieved, surrounding infrastructure such as charging facilities must be improved.

“The entire transport industry is working to resolve issues around charging, pricing subsidies, and other uncertainties, which create psychological barriers for some customers,” Fedel said. “We support and guide our customers toward electrification through partnerships. Many customers operate fixed routes and can charge at depots and destinations, which will reshape their operations.”

Multiple Alternative Energies Drive Low-Carbon Transport

At its indoor booth, Scania displayed five truck masterpieces representing three ways Scania is reducing CO₂ emissions through modular solutions: biodiesel, biogas, and all-electric.

As a pioneer in biofuel trucks, Scania showcased the Super 460 R, the winner of the 2024 German Green Truck Award, at the IAA. Equipped with the new Super powertrain, it can run on both diesel and HVO fuel, as well as biodiesel, to further reduce carbon emissions. Since its launch, the new Super has been praised by global customers and the industry for its outstanding fuel efficiency and performance. The Super series was recently introduced to the Chinese market, where it has been warmly welcomed by customers. Also on display was the Scania V8 660 S, which can run on HVO or other biodiesel, demonstrating how Scania combines powerful performance, fuel efficiency, and lower CO₂ emissions in a single truck.

In terms of biogas, Scania’s new 13-liter trucks offer customers the option of compressed biogas (CBG) or liquefied biogas (LBG), with the latter providing a range of up to 1,800 kilometers.

In the all-electric sector, Scania showcased two models: the all-electric 45 R tractor unit and the all-electric 40 R swap body truck, underscoring Scania’s readiness to deliver outstanding electric trucks. These vehicles feature strong load capacity, fast charging, and an excellent driving experience. Additionally, Scania’s modular system provides a wide selection of electric motors, battery packs, chassis, PTO solutions, and various cab and axle configurations, ensuring each customer receives a solution that meets their specific needs.

Moreover, all of Scania’s “hardware” products are integrated with industry-leading road intelligence digital services, including financing, insurance, maintenance, charging, and driver training. Together, these elements form a comprehensive, customized solution for efficiency, profitability, and sustainability.

Digital Applications Remain at the Forefront

At IAA, Scania introduced two new services based on its digital and connected vehicle expertise. These services support customers by keeping their vehicles operational and providing complete control over vehicle information, helping Scania maintain its leading position in digital solutions. By enhancing the connection between the “My Scania” website and the “Scania Driver” app, internal interactions will become easier and more efficient, allowing customers to manage vehicle locations, pre-trip checks, remaining driving time, and other essential tasks effortlessly.

Fedel emphasized: “We have built a complete digital ecosystem for all our trucks. Customers appreciate the additional digital services that make the work and life of transport companies and drivers easier. With a single click, they can handle insurance, maintenance, financing, or preventive replacements, improving both profitability and uptime.”

As the transportation industry reaches a critical point in its sustainable transition, Scania’s truck series and innovative cost-saving services are leading the way. Scania remains committed to reducing carbon emissions for transport customers, no matter the scale or nature of their operations, by creating modular solutions tailored to each customer’s specific needs.
