The First Scania Prototype Vehicle Made in Rugao, China, Rolls Off the Production Line!

On March 11th, at the “Traton China Media Communication Conference” with the theme of “Global Craftsmanship, Win – Win in China” held in Beijing, Ruthger de Vries, President of Scania’s Industrial Operations in Asia, systematically introduced the construction of Scania’s Rugao industrial production base and revealed that the base will be officially put into production in the fourth quarter of 2025.

During the conference, Ruthger de Vries specifically shared a picture of the first Scania prototype vehicle manufactured at the Rugao industrial production base rolling off the production line.

From the picture, it can be clearly seen that the first “Made – in – China” Scania is a 500R tractor.
The new factory of Scania’s production base in Rugao covers an area of more than 500 mu. The construction of the factory is carried out in two phases simultaneously. In the early stage, the production workshops for chassis and cabs are constructed first, including the welding and painting workshops for the entire cab. The second phase is for the production workshops of power systems and other components.

Benefiting from China’s favorable investment policies and huge market demand, Scania decided to establish its third global industrial production base in China in 2020. “At first, our initial idea was just to set up an assembly factory in China. However, as two years passed, we decided to bring the entire complete production supply chain to China. Since the first pile foundation was laid, we have been in the ‘Chinese speed’, and everything has progressed very rapidly.”

Ruthger de Vries also introduced that the entire team of Scania’s Rugao manufacturing base has exceeded 2,000 people, and more than 600 of them have received long – term training in Brazil and Sweden.

In production and manufacturing, the production procedures, equipment, and standards are consistent globally. In terms of quality control, all components and suppliers will adopt Scania’s global standards. The Scania trucks produced at the Rugao manufacturing base have the same high – quality standards as current Scania trucks.

October 2023
The opening ceremony of the first Scania industrial operation school – enterprise cooperation order class was held at Rugao Secondary Vocational School. This is the first school – enterprise cooperation order class opened by Scania in Asia.

November 2023
The Scania powertrain project started construction. It is expected to be put into production in 2025. After the project is completed, there will be a complete production chain with an annual production capacity of 50,000 units in Rugao. Currently, the newly added project with a total investment of 5 billion yuan for an annual production of 50,000 commercial vehicles and the powertrain project with a total investment of 2 billion yuan have been listed as major projects in Jiangsu Province and high – quality construction projects in Nantong City.

December 2024
The Scania truck project fully completed the construction of factory buildings covering an area of more than 800,000 square meters, and all production lines had entered the commissioning stage.

March 2025
The first prototype vehicle of “Made – in – China” Scania trucks rolled off the production line at Scania’s Rugao industrial production base and was put into relevant road tests.
