2024 IAA China Day: New Opportunities for China-Germany Commercial Vehicle Cooperation

The 2024 Hannover International Transportation Exhibition (2024 IAA Transportation) took place from September 17 to 22, 2024, at the Hannover Exhibition Center in Germany. As per tradition, on the second day of the exhibition, the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Automotive Industry Committee (CCPIT-Auto) co-hosted the 2024 IAA China Day event.

Since 2014, CCPIT-Auto and VDA have jointly organized the “IAA China Day.” This event has garnered widespread attention and support from the China-Germany commercial vehicle industry, becoming an important platform for communication between commercial vehicle enterprises from both countries.

The 2024 IAA Transportation exhibition marks the beginning of a new era for global commercial vehicles, focusing on green, low-carbon, and intelligent development. The 2024 IAA China Day, under the theme of openness, cooperation, and mutual benefit, showcased the technological achievements of Chinese and German commercial vehicle enterprises in the fields of new energy and intelligent technologies. It also explored future cooperation opportunities in new fields and outlined a promising future for the global commercial vehicle industry.

Hildegard Müller, President of the VDA, remarked in her speech that China-Germany automotive cooperation is a model of international collaboration. The VDA has long been committed to promoting dialogue and cooperation between the two industries, and she was pleased to revive the “IAA China Day” event with CCPIT-Auto after a six-year hiatus. She emphasized the importance of this platform in maintaining a fair and just international trade environment and promoting the healthy development of the automotive industries in both countries.

He believes that the green, low-carbon transition will drive structural adjustments in China’s commercial vehicle industry, offering broader development space and cooperation opportunities for both domestic and foreign companies. The trend towards high-end demand in the Chinese commercial vehicle market will continue, and foreign companies need to reposition the roles and goals of their investments in China to achieve greater success in this market.

On behalf of Ambassador Deng Hongbo, Zeng Yingru, Minister of the Chinese Embassy in the Federal Republic of Germany, attended the 2024 IAA China Day event. In her speech, she highly praised CCPIT-Auto and VDA for their continuous efforts in promoting automotive industry exchanges and cooperation between the two countries. She acknowledged the remarkable achievements of China-Germany automotive cooperation and expressed hope for continued collaboration. Zeng also encouraged CCPIT-Auto and VDA to play an active role in supporting the stable development of the global automotive industry.

Daimler remains committed to its dual-track strategy of both pure electric and hydrogen energy-driven vehicles.

Jianyu Wang’s speech, titled “Innovation Leads to Development, Cooperation Creates the Future, Jointly Driving Leapfrog Development of New Energy and Intelligent Vehicle Industries,” focused on three key points: China’s new energy vehicle production and sales have ranked first globally for nine consecutive years under the guidance of national policies, high-level autonomous driving is entering the pilot stage, and the country’s transformation towards new energy and intelligent connected vehicles is accelerating. He emphasized the importance of seizing market opportunities, launching competitive products, innovating business models, enhancing product efficiency through digitalization, and transitioning towards global operations.

Mocchi He delivered a keynote speech titled “Traton’s Path Forward in a Changing World.” In the context of climate protection and energy conservation, Traton is committed to deepening its presence in the Chinese market through technological innovation and adhering to the goals of the Paris Agreement. By applying modular systems, Traton aims to improve internal and external efficiency.

Xiangqiang Zhou praised the IAA China Day as an event “focused on the future, responsibility, and innovation.” His speech, titled “New Opportunities, New Models, New Ecosystems,” emphasized that the commercial vehicle and logistics industries are undergoing a transformation driven by policies, technological innovations, and market demand changes. He highlighted the need to seize opportunities presented by the green, low-carbon transition, industrial intelligence, and cross-industry integration to create new international cooperation models and build a sustainable green, low-carbon global commercial vehicle ecosystem.

Guiping Li’s keynote speech, titled “Starlink Plan: The Third Entrepreneurship of CIMC Vehicles,” introduced the vision and goals of the “Starlink Plan.” By integrating the resources of seven domestic semi-trailer plants, CIMC Vehicles aims to improve production efficiency, shorten delivery cycles, and rebuild its brand and sales, achieving a leap in profitability. Li highlighted the significance of the Starlink Plan as a core initiative for CIMC’s third entrepreneurial endeavor and its role in nurturing new productive forces, which will help CIMC address internal competition and support complex cross-ocean operations.

She analyzed the development of the hydrogen economy from government subsidies to a market-driven model and stressed the importance of building a collaborative hydrogen energy ecosystem across the industry.

Nearly 300 guests and media representatives from the global commercial vehicle and related industries attended the 2024 IAA China Day event.
