On November 18, BYD held a ceremony in Shenzhen’s Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone at the BYD Xiaomo Industrial Park to celebrate its 30th anniversary and the rollout of its 10 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV).
At the event, Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD Co., Ltd., shared BYD’s 30-year journey for the first time. He recounted how the company grew from a small startup with just 20 employees to a world-class enterprise with nearly one million employees, driven by the “dare to think, dare to act, and dare to persist” spirit of its engineers. BYD has consistently used technological innovation to fulfill people’s aspirations for a better life and has actively given back to society, customers, and employees for their ongoing support.
A Global Milestone for BYD and China’s Automotive Industry
Today, BYD has become the first automaker in the world to produce 10 million new energy vehicles, marking a new milestone not just for the company but also for China’s automotive industry. This achievement signifies a solid step forward as China transitions from being an automotive powerhouse to becoming a global leader in the sector, heralding an era of high-quality development for Chinese automobiles.
BYD’s journey to its first 5 million NEVs took 15 years, but the second 5 million was achieved in just 15 months, breaking records and demonstrating the correctness of its commitment to the new energy path and technological innovation.
The Presentation of the 10 Millionth NEV
At the event, Wang Chuanfu handed over BYD’s 10 millionth NEV, a Denza Z9, to Feng Ji, founder and CEO of Game Science and producer of “Black Myth: Wukong.” Feng expressed his honor in becoming the owner of BYD’s milestone vehicle and his commitment to telling China’s story with world-class quality alongside BYD.
Celebrating the Spirit of Innovation
During the ceremony, Wang Chuanfu remarked, “It is our ‘dare to think, dare to act, and dare to persist’ spirit that has brought BYD to where it is today. This spirit belongs not only to BYD but to all Chinese people.” To honor this courage, BYD officially released its 30th-anniversary theme song, “Dare”, a grand and inspiring anthem dedicated to every dreamer who has bravely journeyed with BYD.
Engineering Excellence: The Soul of BYD
BYD’s confidence comes from its technology, which is rooted in its engineering culture. Wang Chuanfu emphasized, “The soul of the engineer is the soul of BYD. Even if all our assets, patents, and factories disappeared, as long as our engineers remain, we could rebuild from scratch.”
Prominent journalist and cultural commentator Qin Shuo explored BYD from an external perspective, interviewing nearly 100 executives and employees and compiling 200 hours of recordings and 1.5 million words of material. His findings were published in “The Soul of the Engineer,” BYD’s only officially authorized book.
Documenting 30 Years of BYD’s Growth
Wang Chuanfu also highlighted BYD’s comprehensive review of its 30-year development journey. Personally leading the effort, he deeply participated in drafting the BYD Basic Outline, which he described as both a summary of BYD’s past experiences and its foundational logic for development, as well as a guiding document for the future. BYD has always thought, spoken, and acted in accordance with this outline—and will continue to do so in the future.
Appreciation for Customers and Employees
To thank its 10 million users and nearly one million employees, BYD held a lottery on-site, witnessed by the Shenzhen Pingshan Notary Office, selecting 90 “super lucky users” to receive a new car usage right.
Focusing on Education and Innovation
Wang Chuanfu also announced BYD’s plan to establish a 3-billion-yuan charity fund focused on education. The initiative includes scholarships at various universities across China and donations of dissected NEVs to vocational schools, museums, and science centers to inspire students’ interest in automotive technology and industrial innovation, nurturing a new generation of outstanding engineers.
