In Q3 of this year, heavy-duty new products (tractors/light trucks) successfully achieved a “triple increase,” gaining an advantage in vehicle manufacturers’ R&D efforts, while light-duty new products fluctuated and fell behind again. Specifically:

  • The share of heavy-duty new products was 68.0% – 66.4% – 68.2%, showing a significant rebound compared to the two quarters of the first half of the year, with an increase of over 10%, surpassing a 2/3 market share. Both tractors and heavy trucks exceeded a 30% share, with the latter expanding its leading advantage through product diversity. Weichai Group had 67 models, Dongfeng Group 42 models, and FAW Group 24 models in the top three, with balanced development and a reasonable structure. BAIC Group had 19 models, XCMG 15 models, Beiben 14 models, and Jianghuai 13 models, while Geely Group and Jirui United each had 11 models, reflecting different development focuses among manufacturers.
  • The share of medium-duty new products was 8.6% – 6.0% – 7.0%, maintaining a single-digit share pattern and still sustaining a level of over 30 new models each quarter, though slightly inferior to last year. In Q3, Dongfeng Group led with eight models, Weichai Group with seven, while BAIC Group, SANY Group, Qingling, and Hubei Sanhuan had 2-3 models each.
  • The share of light-duty new products continuously declined to 23.4% – 27.5% – 24.8%, with an average share in Q3 just exceeding 1/4, totaling 110 models over three months, marking a recent low and a decline of more than half compared to the same period in 2021. It is clear that after the new regulations on overloading, the light-duty truck industry is indeed undergoing product consolidation and optimization. In Q3, Jianghuai Group’s 11 models were the only ones exceeding double digits, followed by Dongfeng Group with nine, and Weichai, Geely, and Jiangling with eight each, marking the top three in new model counts. Eleven other groups released more than one new model, with a focus on blue-plate light trucks and 2-3 ton light trucks. This quarter, Jiangling laid out a 3-ton small truck business, while Guizhou Changjiang “abandoned passengers for cargo” and launched the CHEVOO sub-brand, both significant industry events.

Jiangling Motors strengthened its capability in the 3-4 ton light truck business in Q3 by applying for two new product platforms: “E Fushun” and “E Shunda,” utilizing well-known brand IPs, each with unique features. The former emphasizes a “BEV cabin + pointed small truck” model, highlighting a common platform for passenger and cargo vehicles, as previously introduced; the latter focuses on a product line of “4-ton blue plate light trucks + 3-ton small light trucks,” stressing the product combination of N-class LCVs. Below is a separate introduction to the “E Shunda” series applied for by Jiangling in August:

  • This series includes six models of pure electric cargo truck chassis: the 4-ton JX1040TS/GA2BEV and the 3-ton JX1030T/SEA/B2BEV, with a GVW of 4495kg or 3495kg, both available in single-cab and double-cab configurations. The basic vehicle width is uniform at 1880mm, with rear dual-wheel drive, 185 or 6.50-inch tires, and front wheelbases of 1495mm or 1480mm for the 4-ton and 3-ton models, respectively, with rear wheelbases both at 1470mm, showing slight adjustments to the chassis structure based on total weight.
  • The series offers a wheelbase of 3360mm or 3100mm, optional eight-spring suspensions, and is equipped with Suzhou Times New Energy’s 63.75-degree or CATL’s 49.45-degree LFP batteries. The 4-ton model uses Suzhou Inovance’s 105kW electric drive system, while the 3-ton model uses FSA Green Energy or Bosch Wuxi’s 90kW electric drive system, with ranges of 300 kilometers for both models.
  • The series adopts a new minimalist exterior design: the front surround consists of four cover pieces, with three large closed outer panels below the windshield. The central size is large, displaying the JMC and Jiangling E Shunda logos. The lower integrated bumper area is enlarged, aligning the seams above the central line of the mask area, with lens-style combination lamps featuring daytime running lights. The main headlights and fog lights are integrated into a single lamp bowl, with a narrow ventilation opening above the license plate area. Optional deflectors can be chosen, featuring “Jiangling Light Truck” or “Jiangling Lexing” branding, with the latter being Jiangling’s latest registered trademark.

Following the rise of passenger vehicles, the range-extended REEV technology route is also starting to penetrate the truck sector, covering small trucks to heavy-duty vehicles and even tractors, warranting sufficient attention from manufacturers.

  • In August, Zhonglian Heavy Industry’s Huqiao Banle officially deregistered its passenger vehicle production qualification in its 385th batch of red-headed documents and began laying out N-class general cargo truck chassis in September. In the light truck sector, it partnered with BAIC Foton’s Aumark X series to apply for the HNQ1040RPD28A1 cargo truck chassis with a GVW of 4495kg and a wheelbase of 2.8 meters, featuring single-leaf spring suspension in the front and rear, matched with a Yunnei 2.0L, 122-horsepower diesel engine, with a top speed of 100km/h. Given that BAIC Foton’s similar models are also produced at its Changsha base, and Huqiao’s plant is located about 200 kilometers from there, this chassis can be viewed as a resource integration within Hunan Province.
  • After collaborating with Kaiyi Lingmi to apply for the Changjiang No. 9 series new products in May, Guizhou Changjiang rebranded in July under the “Qiwei” label and subsequently applied for three models of pure electric cargo truck chassis (GK1041BB341BEV02/3/4) as well as cargo, box transport, and refrigerated versions in July and September. These three vehicles are equipped with CATL 100.464-degree or 86.554-degree LFP batteries and an axle-bottom layout, all utilizing advanced electric drive solutions, with peak power differing at 120 or 170kW, and rated loading capacities at 1180, 1255, or 1190kg, with ranges of 540/515/465 kilometers. Qiwei’s CHEVOO is a new brand of Guizhou Ruqi New Energy Automobile Co., established in October 2021, as a joint venture with a 51% stake from Guian New Area Industry and 49% from Chery Wanda, currently appearing as a new sub-brand of Guizhou Changjiang. On January 27, this year, it opened its first direct sales store nationwide in Chongqing, while also combining the backgrounds of Guizhou Changjiang and Chery Automobile, marking a deep collaboration that incorporates regional characteristics among manufacturers. Additionally, Guizhou Changjiang plans to officially deregister its passenger vehicle production qualification this October, becoming another enterprise shifting from passenger to cargo vehicles.
